Recent Degradation of Permafrost in China and the Response to Climatic Warming
نویسنده
چکیده
The cryosphere in China, composed of glaciers, permafrost and snow-covered ground, is changing under the influence of climatic warming. Although continuous measurement data on changes in permafrost are rare due to cost and lack effective techniques, traces of ongoing changes in permafrost in China have been followed with interest (Wang, 1993; Gu et al., 1993; Ding, 1996). Permafrost in China covers approximately 22% of the total land area and an understanding of the changes in permafrost is therefore important. This paper describes the general conditions of change in permafrost during the past few decades in China. Figure 1 shows the areas of concern and the measurement stations.

The long-term fate of permafrost peatlands under rapid climate warming
Permafrost peatlands contain globally important amounts of soil organic carbon, owing to cold conditions which suppress anaerobic decomposition. However, climate warming and permafrost thaw threaten the stability of this carbon store. The ultimate fate of permafrost peatlands and their carbon stores is unclear because of complex feedbacks between peat accumulation, hydrology and vegetation. Fie...
متن کاملPermafrost and changing climate: the Russian perspective.
The permafrost regions occupy about 25% of the Northern Hemisphere's terrestrial surface, and more than 60% of that of Russia. Warming, thawing, and degradation of permafrost have been observed in many locations in recent decades and are likely to accelerate in the future as a result of climatic change. Changes of permafrost have important implications for natural systems, humans, and the econo...

Citation: Matano F (2016) Commentary: The impact of climate change on landslides in southeastern of high-latitude permafrost regions of China. Front. Earth Sci. 4:22. Permafrost is defined as " ground remaining at or below 0 • C for at least two consecutive years " (van Everdingen, 2005). The definition itself stresses that the permafrost should not be considered as a permanent thermal state, b...
متن کاملPermafrost degradation and methane: low risk of biogeochemical climate-warming feedback
Climate change and permafrost thaw have been suggested to increase high latitude methane emissions that could potentially represent a strong feedback to the climate system. Using an integrated earth-system model framework, we examine the degradation of near-surface permafrost, temporal dynamics of inundation (lakes and wetlands) induced by hydro-climatic change, subsequent methane emission, and...
متن کاملVariations in Growing-Season NDVI and Its Response to Permafrost Degradation in Northeast China
Permafrost is extremely sensitive to climate change. The degradation of permafrost has strong and profound effects on vegetation. The permafrost zone of northeastern China is the second largest region of permafrost in China and lies on the south edge of the Eurasian cryolithozone. This study analyzed the spatiotemporal variations of the growing-season Normalization Difference Vegetation Index (...
